Thailand Survival Guide 🌴: Cost of Living Edition 💰
1. Housing Costs 🏠
We currently live in a 3,000 sq. ft. three-bedroom, two-story villa, with a monthly rent of around THB 38,000 (approx. HKD 8,556). When we first arrived, we overpaid due to some "enthusiastic" fellow locals. In fact, similar villas typically cost around THB 25,000–30,000 (approx. HKD 5,635–6,762).
Tip: Compare prices and ask around to avoid overpaying.
2. Drinking Water 💧
In Thailand, tap water isn’t drinkable,
so bottled water is a necessity. A pack of six 1.5L bottles costs THB 55
(approx. HKD 12). If you drink three bottles a day, your monthly cost
would be around THB 825 (approx. HKD 186).

To save money, we bought the STIEBEL ELTRON RO water filter, priced at
THB 10,490 (approx. HKD 2,362). The filter replacement costs are:
- SNOW DUAL FILTER:
- SNOW RO FILTER:
- SNOW DUAL FILTER: Replaced every 6 months, THB 1,650 (approx. HKD 372)
- SNOW RO FILTER: Replaced every 18 months, THB 2,750 (approx. HKD 620)
The total daily cost is around THB 42.8 (approx. HKD 9.64), making it a
cost-effective and convenient solution, especially for households with
two or more people.
Tip: Even renters should consider getting a water filter for better convenience and savings.
I personally believe that in addition to drinking water requiring filtration, it’s also necessary to install a separate filter for faucets and showerheads.
- Takeout: Two-person portions cost around THB 300–400 (approx. HKD 68–90), while one-person portions are THB 150–250 (approx. HKD 34–56).
- Dining out: Better restaurants cost THB 800–1,200 for two people (approx. HKD 181–271).
- Budget options: A simple chicken rice meal costs just THB 50–80 (approx. HKD 11–18).
Summary: Dining expenses vary depending on your budget, from frugal to indulgent.
In Thailand, imported products are subject to a 7% import tax, so for everyday items like milk and meat, it's best to choose Thai-made options, which are much cheaper.
In general, restaurants in tourist areas or those with a better environment tend to be more expensive than street stalls in the city. Before heading out, you can check reviews on Google Maps or look at the menu prices to decide if it's worth visiting. However, I personally think Chiang Mai’s prices are still much cheaper compared to big cities like Bangkok and Pattaya.
4. Electricity 💡
Since we frequently use air conditioning, our monthly electricity bill is about THB 3,500–4,000 (approx. HKD 791–904).
Good news: It’s still cheaper than in Hong Kong!
In Thailand, whether there are mosquitoes or not, there will still be many small flying insects at night. I think it’s essential to have at least one of these large insect-killer lamps THB 799(HKD 180).
Summary 💡
In Thailand, with rent at THB 25,000–30,000 (approx. HKD 5,635–6,762), plus other living expenses, the cost of living is much lower than in Hong Kong.
Tip: Plan ahead and choose a lifestyle that suits your needs.
