Yan Sizhong, the guardian of this cemetery, has devoted over forty years of his life to its care.

Amid the passage of time and the gradual fading of history, he continues to quietly safeguard this narrative, believing in the transcendent value of his work.

"If I don’t do this, this history will truly disappear."
The Bayonet Left by the First Generation Caretaker
Yan Sizhong often says, "Caring for the cemetery is not just about respecting the deceased; it’s about accounting for the history of our entire community."
他回憶起第一代守墓人——一位姓黃的長者，如何在極其困難的條件下守護這片土地。
He recalls the first caretaker, an elder surnamed Huang, and how he protected this land under extremely difficult conditions.
「他過世後，這份工作就由第二代、第三代傳承，最後輪到了我。」
"After he passed away, this work was passed down to the second and third generations, and finally to me."
岩思中強調，守墓從來都不是為了利益，而是一份沉重的使命。
Yan emphasizes that caretaking has never been about profit; it’s a heavy mission.
他提到，墓地的維護資金非常有限，早期根本沒有任何資助。
He mentioned that the funds for cemetery maintenance were extremely limited, with no financial support in the early days.
「從第一代到第三代，我們都靠自己的力量維持這裡的整潔。」
"From the first to the third generation, we relied solely on our efforts to keep this place clean."
直到近些年，台灣的文史館才每月提供6,000泰銖的補助。
It wasn’t until recent years that Taiwan’s historical institutions began providing a monthly subsidy of 6,000 Thai Baht.
他笑著說：「這點錢根本不夠用，但比起什麼都沒有，已經是很大的幫助了。」
He laughed and said, "This money is far from enough, but compared to having nothing, it’s already a big help."
儘管資源有限，岩思中依然每日親自打掃墓地，即使腳痛到無法行走，也從不懈怠。
Despite limited resources, Yan personally cleans the cemetery every day, never slacking off, even when his legs hurt so much that he can’t walk.
「有時候我腳腫得連鞋子都穿不上，但我不忍心看到墓地荒蕪不堪。」
"Sometimes my feet are so swollen that I can’t even put on shoes, but I can’t bear to see the cemetery fall into disrepair."

岩思中說：「我們的身份，是用血與命換來的。」
Yan says, "Our identity was earned with blood and lives."
他提到，當年的老兵為泰國政府效力，平定邊境的戰亂，甚至以生命換取後代的安穩生活。
He mentioned that the veterans served the Thai government, pacifying border conflicts, and even exchanged their lives for the stable future of their descendants.
然而，這些貢獻在歷史的長河中漸漸被遺忘，讓人感到無奈與痛心。
However, these contributions have gradually been forgotten in the long course of history, leaving a sense of helplessness and sorrow.
"If it weren’t for General Tuan Xiwen, our situation today might be completely different."
他多次提到段將軍對泰北華人後裔的貢獻，特別是在協助他們獲得泰國國籍方面所做的努力。
He often mentions General Tuan’s contributions to the descendants of Chinese in Northern Thailand, especially his efforts in helping them obtain Thai citizenship.
「沒有國籍的時候，連最基本的生存權利都沒有。現在我們的身份與泰國人無異，這是一種尊嚴的回歸。」
"When we didn’t have citizenship, we didn’t even have the basic right to survive. Now, our identity is no different from that of Thai people, and this is a return to dignity."
然而，他也提到身份合法化背後的艱辛過程。
However, he also talks about the arduous process behind the legalization of their status.
「我們這些後裔的生活依然不容易，尤其是在山區，發展受到很多限制。」
"Our lives as descendants are still not easy, especially in the mountainous areas where development faces many restrictions."
「很多年輕人選擇離開，只剩下我們這些老人還在堅守。」他說。
"Many young people choose to leave, and only us elders are left holding on," he said.

He said, "The younger generation is becoming less interested in history. If we don’t speak up, this history will truly disappear."
他提到，過去曾有許多台灣的遊客來訪，但現在人越來越少。
He mentioned that many Taiwanese visitors used to come, but now fewer and fewer people visit.
「有些人聽過我們的故事，還會留下捐款，但大多數人只是來看看，很少有人會深究背後的歷史。」
"Some people who hear our story leave donations, but most just come to take a look and rarely delve into the history behind it."
他感慨道：「我們的故事，就像墓地一樣，慢慢被世人遺忘。」
He lamented, "Our story, like the cemetery, is slowly being forgotten by the world."

「這裡是我的根，我走了，就沒人接手了」

守墓的生活是孤獨的，也是困難的。
The life of a caretaker is both lonely and challenging.
岩思中說：「我的兄弟們都走了，只剩下我和母親留在這裡。」
Yan said, "My brothers have all left; only my mother and I remain here."
「他們有的去了曼谷，有的去了國外，只有我選擇留守。」
"Some went to Bangkok, others went abroad. Only I chose to stay."
「因為這裡是我的根，也是我們整個群體的根。」
"Because this is my root, and the root of our entire community."
他提到，留在山區生活遠不如外出打工輕鬆。
He mentioned that living in the mountains is far less easy than working outside.
「我會講中文，如果去曼谷當翻譯或導遊，一個月可以賺2、3萬泰銖。」
"I can speak Chinese. If I went to Bangkok to work as a translator or tour guide, I could earn 20,000 to 30,000 Thai Baht a month."
「但我不想走，因為我知道，這裡如果沒有我，就沒有人來接手了。」
"But I don’t want to leave, because I know that if I leave, no one will take over here."
「有人說我很笨，放著高薪不去賺，卻選擇待在這裡。」
"Some people say I’m foolish for not taking the high salary and choosing to stay here."
岩思中平靜地說：「但我不後悔。我守護的不僅是這些墳墓，還有我們的歷史和文化。」
Yan calmly said, "But I don’t regret it. I’m not just guarding these graves; I’m guarding our history and culture."
未來的擔憂與堅持
Concerns and Persistence for the Future
當談及未來時，岩思中坦言：「我不知道接下來該怎麼辦。」
When talking about the future, Yan frankly said, "I don’t know what to do next."
「我年紀越來越大，身體也不好，總有一天我無法再堅持下去了。」
"I’m getting older, my health isn’t good, and one day I won’t be able to continue."
他提到，很多遊客都會問他，為什麼不讓自己的孩子接手這份工作。
He mentioned that many visitors ask him why he doesn’t let his children take over the job.
「孩子們對這裡沒有感情，這種事情，沒有感情是做不下去的。」
"My children have no emotional connection to this place. Without that connection, this kind of work can’t be done."
儘管如此，他依然對未來抱有希望。
Despite this, he still holds hope for the future.
「也許有一天，會有更多人知道這段歷史，願意為它付出。」
"Maybe one day, more people will learn about this history and be willing to contribute to it."
「我只希望，在我無法再守護這裡之前，能找到一個可以延續這份使命的人。」
"I just hope that before I can no longer guard this place, I can find someone to carry on this mission."

Personal Reflections: Encountering Belief
作為一個在個人利益主義城市中成長的人，我無法想像岩思中這樣的偉大人物。
As someone who grew up in a city dominated by personal interest, I can hardly imagine a great person like Yan Sizhong.
他拿著微薄的薪水，日復一日地做著最艱苦的工作。
He earns a meager salary and performs the hardest work day after day.
他的每一天，就是把墓園打掃乾淨，期待稀少的遊客來參拜他心中最尊敬的人。
Every day for him is spent cleaning the cemetery, waiting for the rare visitors to pay their respects to the people he holds in the highest regard.
這個地方，不會中文的遊客絕對不會來，而會中文的遊客隨著時間的流逝，也漸漸不知道這段歷史的存在。
This place is one that non-Chinese-speaking visitors will never come to, and as time passes, even Chinese-speaking visitors are gradually forgetting the existence of this history.
人越來越少，這樣的情況會磨蝕一個人的意志，尤其是當他所做的事並不是為了金錢利益的時候。
Fewer and fewer people come, and this situation can erode a person’s resolve, especially when their work isn’t for financial gain.
然而，岩思中沒有被這些困難擊垮。
However, Yan Sizhong has not been defeated by these difficulties.
他的信念深深地觸動了我，也讓我重新思考自己所在乎的價值。
His belief deeply moved me and made me rethink the values I care about.
我能做的不多，或許只是記住這段故事，並把它傳遞給更多人。
