Chiang Rai Private Museum Travelogue

With constant rain in Chiang Rai recently, indoor activities have become our go-to option. We stumbled upon a mysterious private museum on Google Maps. Although it lacked any official website or detailed information, its 4.6-star rating from 371 reviews convinced us to visit despite the rain. The entry fee is THB 300 per person, which includes a guided tour by an English-speaking guide lasting about an hour. We found it to be well worth the price.

My husband and I initially thought the sign indicated the museum was closed, but it turned out to simply display the entrance fee of THB 300 per person and the daily opening hours.

Upon entering, we first saw an outdoor garden filled with various statues and decorations. Moving further, we reached the ticket office, and beyond that, the actual museum.

The Mysterious Owner's Background

Upon entering the museum, the owner’s photograph caught our attention. The guide mentioned that he is a member of the royal family and is still alive. This low-profile yet mysterious background added a sense of intrigue to our visit. The museum boasts an extensive collection, reportedly acquired by the owner over decades from various parts of the world. However, most items lack any indication of their origin, leaving us to speculate whether private transactions or secretive channels were involved—a topic that fascinated us throughout the tour.

Among his collections are many such silverware items. In ancient times, gold was extremely rare, and silverware was typically owned only by nobles or royals.

There is also a bronze drum, which the description claims to be 3,000 years old.

Rare photographs of ancient royals are also on display, showcasing the various royal families that once existed in Southeast Asia.

These silver royal utensils were likely used for rituals.

A metal shrine is also featured, though the statue it once housed has long since disappeared.

The text on this item is indecipherable now, but from the images, it seems to depict local history.

There are also ancient coins of unknown age.

The museum houses a diverse collection of Buddha statues in various styles.

The topmost Buddha statue is enclosed in a shrine, and its hands are made of marble, which was considered extremely valuable in ancient times.

The Splendor of Ancient Noble Textiles

One of the most stunning sections of the museum is the collection of ancient noble textiles. Their state of preservation is astonishing, especially given the susceptibility of fabrics to mold and damage. A particularly striking garment adorned with emerald-green sequins stands out. Remarkably, the sequins are made from the shells of a rare insect, showcasing a high level of craftsmanship. Such artifacts are not only precious but also carry deep cultural and historical significance.

Buddhist Artifacts and Ritual Utensils

Although the museum’s collection of Buddhist artifacts is not extensive, its exquisite craftsmanship is remarkable. Items such as relics of high monks, miniature Buddha statues, and royal ritual silverware—including bowls, pots, and utensils—are awe-inspiring. Each artifact seems to tell the story of ancient ritualistic mystery and solemnity, evoking profound respect for history and faith.

It was the first time we had seen a Buddha statue dressed in such attire.

The gems on its head had been stolen and replaced with plastic ones during restoration. The statue’s face and hands are made of rare, pure white marble, and its attire is embedded with numerous gemstones. It’s rare to have such an up-close look at an antique Buddha statue.

Inside these two glass cases are meticulously crafted miniature Buddha statues, smaller than a pinky fingernail. Without the guide pointing them out, they would have been almost impossible to notice.

It’s hard to imagine how such intricate work was done without the aid of magnifying glasses in the past.

These items are most likely tools used in rituals.

Exquisite Royal Treasures and Tales

Beyond garments, the museum also houses large royal items such as emperor-exclusive beds, daybeds, and shrines. The guide explained that these wooden pieces survived because ancient craftsmen would disassemble and bury them in underground chambers or caves during wartime, reassembling them in peacetime. This ingenuity and foresight left us in awe of ancient wisdom and effort.

The emperor’s bed gives us a glimpse into the stature of people from the past, estimated to be around 130–150 cm tall.

This seat belonged to a high-ranking monk and was often used in religious ceremonies. It’s also designed to be disassembled.

Since the establishment of animal protection laws, genuine tiger fangs like these have become increasingly rare.

This seems to be a more modern piece, highlighting the owner’s passion for textile and clothing antiques.

Connections Between the Collection and China

During the visit, we noticed photos of the owner visiting China multiple times. The guide mentioned that China is a significant source of his collection, particularly the exquisite ritual artifacts and royal items. This made me reflect on the vast and rich Chinese antique market, which likely contributed to the impressive scale of his collection.

This throne, approximately 2–3 meters tall, likely belonged to a significant royal family in ancient times.

This bed is the owner’s personal sleeping bed.

The quilt on it features exceptionally fine craftsmanship.

This secret-compartment bookshelf seems to be of European origin, as it is adorned with carvings of jesters and musicians.

Finally, we reached an artificial cave designed to mimic the treasure hiding places used during times of war.
